Geography

Intent

Our Geography curriculum helps children build a strong understanding of the world, its places, people, environments and the ways they are connected. Through the MyMastery Ark Curriculum, pupils learn key geographical knowledge alongside important skills such as reading maps, interpreting data, asking thoughtful questions and understanding how human and physical geography interact.

We want children to feel curious about the world, develop respect for different places and cultures, and understand how their choices can impact the environment.

Implementation

Learning is carefully sequenced so children build knowledge year by year. They study their local area, the UK, Europe and the wider world, developing a secure sense of place and how different environments are formed and used.

Children learn to use maps, atlases and geographical information confidently. They revisit key ideas such as place, environment, climate, interconnection and sustainability in different contexts, helping them make meaningful links between what they learn.

From EYFS onwards, geographical vocabulary is taught clearly and built upon over time, enabling children to talk confidently about physical and human geography.

Impact

We check children’s understanding through discussion, questioning, short retrieval tasks and end‑of‑unit activities. Pupils who can remember key knowledge, use geographical skills and explain their thinking are showing strong progress

Curriculum Goals

The curriculum seeks to:

  1. Children demonstrate an increasingly sophisticated understanding of geographical concepts such as:
    • The relationship between physical and human geography.
    • Key geographical features, including landforms, weather, and ecosystems.
    • The impact of human activity on the environment, with a focus on sustainability and conservation.
  2. Children develop the ability to analyse geographical data, maps, and sources of information critically.
  3. Children are encouraged to ask geographical questions, analyse sources, and form their conclusions about the world around them.
  4. We focus on enabling children to understand global and local geography, which promotes respect for diverse cultures and regions.
  5. Emphasis on sustainability, climate change, and the interdependence between humans and the environment.

Beyond the Curriclum

Trips, fieldwork and real‑life experiences help children apply what they have learned. Our whole‑school environmental work encourages pupils to think about issues such as recycling, climate change and caring for our local area. We also take part in community projects that help children understand their role as responsible global citizens
