Intent
Our History curriculum gives children a strong understanding of the past and how it connects to the world today. Through the MyMastery Ark Curriculum, pupils learn key events, people and ideas across different periods of history. They also develop important skills such as asking thoughtful questions, using evidence, spotting similarities and differences, and understanding why things happened.
We want children to enjoy history, feel curious about the past and build the knowledge they need for later learning.
Implementation
Lessons follow a clear, sequenced structure so children build knowledge over time. Each unit links to what pupils have learned before, helping them understand how different periods and events fit together.
Children study a balance of local, British and world history, from ancient civilisations to more modern events. They revisit important historical ideas such as empire, power, migration and innovation, so they can make connections and deepen their understanding.
Historical vocabulary is taught from the early years onwards, helping children talk confidently about what they know.
Impact
We check children’s understanding through discussion, questioning, short retrieval tasks and end‑of‑unit activities. Pupils who can remember key knowledge and apply historical skills are showing strong progress.
Curriculum Goals
The curriculum seeks to:
- Develop children’s chronological understanding and ability to sequence historical events.
- Develop inquisitive children, who are keen to ask questions and persevere to be able to find the answers.
- Enable children to understand the diversity of human experiences and perspectives, fostering a sense of global citizenship.
- Promote critical thinking skills through analysis, interpretation, and the evaluation of historical sources.
- Encourage the development of research skills and the ability to construct well-founded historical arguments.
- Foster an appreciation for the relevance of history in understanding current events and future challenges
Beyond the Curriculum
Trips, visitors and real‑life experiences help bring history to life. Visits to museums and local landmarks support children in connecting classroom learning with the world around them. We also encourage families and community members to share personal stories from the past, helping pupils understand history through lived experience.
