PE

Intent

At London Colney Primary and Nursery School, we strive to deliver a Physical Education curriculum that is engaging, inclusive and enjoyable for all pupils. Our curriculum provides a broad range of physical activities designed to develop pupils’ health, fitness and overall wellbeing.

Our high-quality PE curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to develop confidence, succeed and excel in sport and other physically demanding activities. It supports pupils in becoming physically confident and encourages lifelong participation in physical activity. Through competitive and cooperative experiences, pupils develop key values such as teamwork, fairness and respect.

Implementation

Our PE programme offers a wide variety of sports, physical activities and competitive opportunities to ensure all pupils are actively engaged. Pupils receive two PE lessons each week, taught by their class teacher. Detailed lesson planning supports teachers in delivering high-quality PE and ensures secure subject knowledge across all areas of the curriculum.

Lessons are carefully planned and sequenced to build on prior learning, allowing pupils to apply and develop a broad range of skills in different contexts. Opportunities for practice, repetition and revision are embedded to support progression and confidence.

The curriculum is further enhanced through participation in sporting tournaments with schools within our Trust and the local area, as well as through a range of after-school clubs. All pupils are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres by the end of Year 6.

As an Active School, we promote physical activity beyond timetabled PE lessons by incorporating movement and active learning opportunities across other curriculum areas.

EYFS and Key Stage 1 Physical Education

Pupils develop fundamental movement skills and become increasingly confident and competent. They access a broad range of activities that develop agility, balance and coordination, both independently and with others. Pupils take part in competitive (against self and others) and cooperative activities in increasingly challenging situations.

Key Stage 2 Physical Education

Pupils continue to apply and develop a wider range of skills, learning how to use and link them to create sequences and actions. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with others and develop an understanding of how to improve their performance. Pupils learn to evaluate their own success and recognise areas for development across a range of physical activities and sports.

Impact

Progress is measured through our curriculum progression model. Pupils demonstrate good progress when they know more, remember more and can do more in line with curriculum expectations.

Assessment takes place during and after lessons using informal strategies such as questioning, discussion, observation, reviewing work against learning objectives and short retrieval activities. At the end of each unit, summative assessments are used to evaluate pupils’ understanding and inform future planning.

As a result, pupils leave London Colney Primary and Nursery School with the skills, confidence and motivation to lead active, healthy lifestyles.
