PSHE inc RSHE

Intent

At London Colney Primary School, we are committed to promoting the personal, social, emotional and mental well-being of all pupils. Through the Jigsaw PSHE/RSHE programme, we aim to develop confident, healthy, responsible individuals who are prepared to make safe and informed decisions now and in the future.

Our intent is to ensure that pupils:

  • Develop a strong sense of self-worth, identity and emotional literacy.
  • Build positive relationships, underpinned by respect, empathy and kindness.
  • Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy.
  • Learn how to stay safe, including online safety and safeguarding.
  • Are prepared for the changes of growing up, in an age-appropriate and inclusive way.

Jigsaw provides a whole-school, spiral curriculum that supports our values and promotes a shared language for learning about emotions, relationships and personal development.

Implementation

PSHE/RSHE is taught weekly using the Jigsaw programme, ensuring a consistent, progressive and engaging approach from EYFS to Year 6. Jigsaw is structured around six half-termly themes (Puzzles), which are revisited and built upon each year:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Key features of implementation include:

  • Age-appropriate, inclusive lessons that meet statutory RSHE requirements.
  • A focus on emotional literacy, using mindfulness and reflection to support well-being.
  • Opportunities for discussion, collaboration and pupil voice within a safe and supportive environment.
  • Clear links to safeguarding, British Values and SMSC.
  • Adaptation and differentiation to support all learners, including those with SEND.

Teachers use Jigsaw planning, resources and assessment tools to ensure high-quality delivery and to monitor pupils’ understanding and progress.

Impact

As a result of our PSHE/RSHE curriculum and the consistent use of Jigsaw, pupils:

  • Are emotionally aware, able to recognise and manage their feelings.
  • Show respect and tolerance towards others and celebrate diversity.
  • Demonstrate positive relationships and effective communication skills.
  • Have an age-appropriate understanding of health, safety and relationships, including online safety.
  • Feel confident to talk about worries, seek help and make responsible choices.

Evidence of impact is seen through pupil voice, behaviour, engagement in learning, and the positive, inclusive culture within the school. Pupils leave our school equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to navigate life’s challenges and to be active, responsible members of society.
